Oswald Dog Clock
Dog-shaped rolling eye antique desk clock

Product Description
This is a very unique antique desk clock believed to have been manufactured by Oswald in Germany around the 1920s to 1940s. Its most striking feature is its "automaton clock" mechanism, where the two large eyes rotate to display the time. The charming expression of the dog and the somewhat surreal and kitsch design possess a unique appeal not found in modern products. Made from a composite wood material, the antique's aged patina, acquired over many years, is also part of its charm. The inscription "Marke ges.gesch." (gesetzlich geschutzt/legally protected, registered design) can be seen on the lower left of the back. This is a popular collector's item, globally known as the "Oswald Dog Clock," and it is an exquisite piece that makes a powerful statement as an interior decoration. (R080237)

Special Note
While there is no official, clear record regarding the breed of dog for this "Oswald Dog Clock," collectors generally believe it to be a Pekingese. In Europe during the 1920s and 1930s, the Pekingese, known as a Chinese imperial dog, was very popular. At that time, in Germany and France, designs of small, companionable dogs with large eyes, flat noses, and long-haired ears were extensively used in toys, ceramics, clocks, and stuffed animals. The Oswald Dog Clock's design is quite similar to this trend.
